Reiger Park rallies for hope at cancer awareness shavathon

The roar of motorbikes and the buzz of clippers filled the air when residents, bikers, and supporters came together to close Breast Cancer Awareness Month in unity, honour, and heartfelt support for those battling cancer.

The Reiger Park Cancer Support Group, in partnership with the Calvary Bikers Ministry, recently wrapped up Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a shavathon at the St Vincent’s Anglican Church.

Founder of the support group, Ulita Billings, credited the day’s success to the community’s continued commitment to the cause.

“We thank God for making this event possible and a success. This was a special occasion, as we celebrated 10 years of walking with those affected by cancer, honouring survivors, remembering those still fighting bravely, and paying tribute to those we’ve lost.”

Billings urged the community to continue breaking the stigma around cancer and to support those impacted by it.

“Cancer doesn’t ask for age, gender, religion or race. We believe that no one should walk this journey alone. We walk it hand and hand together,” she added.

Billings thanked the leadership of the church for providing their venue, Mark Hank and the Calvary Bikers Ministry for their support in organising and all sponsors and biker communities who contributed.

“It was heartwarming to witness the involvement of young people. We thank and salute you for your compassion and energy.”

A decade of awareness and giving back
Billings reflected on the organisation’s commitment to serving the community, including their annual Shoebox Drive, now in its ninth year, which collects gifts for young cancer patients at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, affectionately called “Little Cancer Warriors”.

Residents can take part by donating a shoebox (filled or empty) to bring joy to children battling cancer.

“Join us in making a difference in the lives of those suffering in silence,” Billings appealed.
