Reiger Park Cancer Support Group celebrates 10th anniversary

The group was established to combat the stigma of cancer and create a safe space for those affected by the disease.

The Reiger Park Cancer Support Group celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, marking a decade of bringing hope and support to those affected by cancer.

Founded with the mission to address the emotional and spiritual needs of cancer patients, survivors and caregivers, the group has made a significant impact in the Reiger Park community and surrounding areas.

One of the group’s most cherished initiatives is their annual hospital visit, which they have been doing for the past eight years.

On December 18, the organisation visited two cancer wards, a medical ward and the outpatient department at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, blessing 85 young cancer warriors, aged three to 12 with gifts.

Ulita Billings, founder of the support group said: “Seeing the smiles on their faces, despite their suffering, reminds us of the importance of what we do. For those moments, we bring hope and joy.”

The visit was made possible through the generosity of individuals, companies and ministries, including Mark, Henk and the Calvary Bikers Ministry.

Ulita said Reiger Park Cancer Support Group was established to combat the stigma of cancer and create a safe space for those affected by the disease.

Through counselling, spiritual support and community education, they help alleviate the emotional toll of cancer.

Their outreach extends beyond Reiger Park to neighbouring areas like Delmore, Elspark, Windmill Park and Boksburg.

“We’ve been blessed to touch so many lives,” said Ulita. “But our work is not done. We’ll continue reaching out to help those in need.”

Partnerships
As they celebrate their 10th anniversary, the group expresses deep gratitude to the churches, businesses, media outlets, and individuals who have supported them over the years.

“Their work wouldn’t be possible without these partnerships.

“We trust that God will continue to guide us and with the support of the community, we’ll keep bringing hope to those who need it most.

“As part of celebrating this milestone, we have exciting plans in place, including educational talks featuring professionals, doctors and professors we collaborate with, counselling sessions led by experts and cancer awareness events to engage with and educate the community.”
