Locals weigh in on SANDF deployment against gangs

With gangsterism on the rise, the South African government has announced that the SANDF will support the police in tackling gang violence. We spoke to Boksburg residents to hear their views on whether military involvement is the right solution or if other approaches could work better.

The South African government announced during the State of the Nation Address (SONA) that the SANDF will be deployed to support the police in combating gang violence and organised crime in communities.
The Boksburg Advertiser spoke to a few locals to find out whether they think sending the army is the right approach.

Lerato Msimango: Honestly, I think it could scare the gangs and reduce shootings for a while. But it’s only a short-term solution. The government needs to focus on jobs and education too.

Roger Desousa: I feel safe when there’s more security, so if the SANDF can protect us, I’m for it. But there has to be accountability, people in uniform shouldn’t abuse their power.
Mathosi Ntsaku: I think it could help, but I don’t know if soldiers alone can solve the problem. We also need social programs for kids so they don’t join gangs in the first place.
Lonwie Kesa: I don’t really agree with using the army. Community policing, local programmes, and involving youth in positive activities would be more effective than just sending soldiers.
