3D printing event sparks creativity in Bartlett

It created a space for learning, networking, and creativity.

Community members gathered in Bartlett on March 21 for an engaging 3D printing event that offered insight into innovation, entrepreneurship and hands-on technology.

The vent, hosted by DC3D Printers (Makers Hub), brought together hobbyists, entrepreneurs and residents eager to explore the growing world of digital manufacturing.

It created a space for learning, networking, and creativity, as attendees had the opportunity to learn, network, and interact with industry professionals firsthand.
Director of DC3D, Henk van der Bank, said the organisation is driven by a mission to make 3D printing more accessible to South Africans.

“3D printing can be a hobby, a source of income or a tool to solve real-world problems. I am really happy about the turnout, and I hope it sparks encouragement amongst the people,” he said.

He pointed out that the technology is already helping businesses operate more efficiently by producing parts in hours instead of weeks, while also supporting education by bringing engineering concepts into classrooms.
“A key part of what we do is empowering local creators and entrepreneurs. When local makers succeed, the entire community benefits,” Van der Bank added.

The event featured games and raffles, including the chance to win one of the 3D printing machines, as well as opportunities to engage with local vendors and filament manufacturers.

Attendees were also shown a variety of printed items and models, demonstrating the wide range of possibilities the technology offers.
One attendee, Lizzete Swaanepoel, said: “It’s actually amazing to see what can be created. I didn’t expect it to be this detailed and practical.”

Visitors heard how others have used 3D printing to launch small businesses and turn ideas into real-world solutions.
Although wet weather conditions affected overall attendance, those who attended described the experience as insightful and worthwhile.

The gathering highlighted the role of innovation in community development and encouraged more residents to explore opportunities in the 3D printing space.
