Walk brings community back to Witfield Dam
Residents gathered for a community walk at Witfield Dam, supporting efforts to revive the public space and encourage its use.
Community members came together for a pet-friendly walk at Witfield Dam on March 21, organised by NG Kerk Witfield-Wes as part of its ongoing efforts to encourage residents to return to the park and take pride in the area.
Participants made their way along the planned route, which included sections of surrounding streets and the park itself, with options available for different fitness levels.

Although rainy conditions affected the turnout, those who attended embraced the experience, walking alongside family, friends and their pets.
Event organiser Hein Lange previously said the goal was to create an inclusive community initiative open to all residents, regardless of background.

After the walk there was a market held at the church which had fun activities like paintball and various stalls.
Butcher Biltong had a raffle and lucky visitor Corne’ Nickols won a biltong cake.
The walk was also supported by various organisations who brought donations such as pet food and blankets.
Airport Pets donated dog food that was received by Pearl Throp of Boksburg SPCA. The church also managed to sell 2 100 ‘pannekoek’, helping to raise funds for the initiative.
Residents said the event was not only about fitness, but about reclaiming and reconnecting with a space that has long been underutilised.
Grace and Giggles, and Tiny Tots learning centres joined the walk with the kids looking colourful and lively.
“It was really nice to see people coming together for something positive, especially for Witfield Dam. Now that we’ve experienced it we will take more walks here,” said Saffron from Grace and Giggles.
The initiative also highlighted ongoing concerns around maintenance at the park, which residents say has discouraged regular use.
However, community members continue to play an active role in improving the space through clean-up efforts and upkeep.
Lange expressed his sadness at the council not doing its part to maintain the area.
“I borrowed a lawnmower from a resident to open up the path we used for this walk. The grass grows quickly with the ongoing rain. Most of our work to help maintain the dam area goes unrecognised,” he said.
Despite challenges, the walk marked a step forward in bringing life back to Witfield Dam, with organisers planning to host more walks throughout the year.
The next walk will be on May 1.
