Women find strength and skills at Boksburg's Goju Karate Academy
From toddlers to adults, local women are training hard at a long-standing Boksburg dojo to build confidence, sharpen situational awareness and learn practical self-defence taught by experienced instructors who hope their skills are never needed.
Women are taught more than just martial arts at the Goju Karate Academy in Parkrand. Here, they also gain confidence, increased situational awareness, and useful self-defence techniques.
The academy offers traditional Okinawan karate courses for everyone from three- and four-year-olds to adults, with programmes ranging from beginner basics to advanced competition preparation.
It is done under the direction of Sensei Tarryn Madgwick (fourth Dan), a senior instructor with over 20 years of expertise.
“We train hard so that we can do it, but we pray we don’t have to,” Madgwick said, emphasising that the work takes time.
She said regular practice creates the true protection and resilience communities need, and she appreciates the increasing number of women attending the dojo.
When Boksburg women get to the mat, they claim that the advantages extend beyond skill in the field.
Trainees rehearse awareness, de-escalation, escape techniques, and fundamental strikes intended for real-world interactions at weekly women-only drills and mixed sessions.
Participants gain the ability to recognise dangerous situations, establish clear limits, and respond swiftly when necessary skills that many claim have already altered how they navigate the city.

Madgwick notes that self-defence isn’t an instant cure but a commitment:
“When you learn how to defend yourself for anything worthwhile, you have to put time in, and it’s not a quick fix.”
Women interested in joining can visit the dojo for a trial class or contact instructors for scheduling and women-only session times.
For many local women, the mat has become more than a place to learn moves; it’s where confidence, preparedness and a stronger sense of safety take root.
