Community members are invited to lace up their running shoes for a Women’s Month charity event to help keep girls in school.
The Empower Her Charity Fun Run will take place at Brakpan Airfield on August 10, with proceeds going towards providing menstrual cups to schoolgirls who struggle to access menstrual hygiene products.
Hosted by La Belle Empower Her in partnership with Medi-Aktiv, the 5km fun run and walk aims to raise awareness about period poverty while encouraging community participation in a family-friendly event.
According to organiser Kerry Matthysen, every entry will contribute towards ensuring girls have access to sustainable menstrual products, helping reduce school absenteeism.
“Every kilometre completed represents an opportunity to change a girl’s future,” she said.
“This isn’t about running fast, it’s about running with purpose. Together we can help ensure that periods never become a barrier to education.”
Participants can expect a scenic 5km route around Brakpan Airfield, with aircraft and helicopters on display, as well as a market for visitors to enjoy throughout the morning.
Schools, businesses, running clubs, families and individuals are encouraged to take part or sponsor additional menstrual cups for girls in need.
“By simply entering the fun run, participants become part of a movement that empowers young women through education, confidence and dignity,” Matthysen said.
The event starts at 08:00 at Brakpan Airfield. Entry costs R130 per person, while children between the ages of six and 12 pay R65. Children under six may participate free of charge.
Funds raised through the event will support La Belle Empower Her’s ongoing efforts to improve menstrual health and provide sustainable menstrual products to girls, helping ensure that menstruation does not become a barrier to education.
