Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) is putting free access to armed response at the fingertips of every South African.

Head of public relations and advocacy Minesh Bhagaloo explained returning home safely is not a privilege, it is the right of every woman, adding that recent reports of femicide is a daily reminder of the very-real safety concerns the women of our country face.

“It is in times like these that public and private partnerships should be sought to find solutions,” he said.

“Society needs to stop and have that honest look in the mirror. What are we doing to actively promote and protect the lives of the women of South Africa? As an organisation with tens of thousands of female members this was a question that struck deep.”

The AA went back to its roots and what it stands for, promoting accessible, affordable and safe mobility.

Members of the community, especially women, are encouraged to take advantage of the organisation’s free mobile panic assist, which gives them access to armed response with a click of button.

“The service will be valid for 30 days from registration,” said Bhagaloo.

“Visiting our website will activate the service, download the MyAA app which gives users access to numerous armed-response partners across the country.

“There are no hidden fees or strings attached and there will be no automatic fee opt-in after the 30-day period.”

CEO Bobby Ramagwede said that it is sad and unfortunate that as a society we have gotten to this space.

“The AA is putting its hand up and saying to the women of South Africa — we see you, we hear you and we want to help,” he said.

“Make sure that the women in your circle, be it an employee or a family member, sign-up for this vital offering and consider keeping them safe long after the 30-day period lapses.

“As an association that has been a part of the fabric of South Africa for almost a century, it is a privilege to do what we can to better the lives of women facing these challenges.”
