Reiger Park shooting: Bail split as two accused remain behind bars

Two accused were denied bail while two others were released on strict conditions following a lengthy bail application linked to the deaths of four people in Reiger Park.

Two of the four accused facing serious charges linked to the deadly August 7 Reiger Park shooting were denied bail, while the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court granted two others bail on October 6.

Regan Collis (23) and Jamel Meyer (24), applicants one and two, respectively, were refused bail after the court found they failed to demonstrate exceptional circumstances warranting their release in the interests of justice.

The magistrate also noted that Collis has 11 pending matters, six of which he is attending at the Boksburg Magistrates’ Court.

Alvino Crawford (27) and Mcfoolen Ford (26), applicants three and four, were granted bail of R5 000 each, subject to strict conditions.

The matter stems from an incident during which four people, Jaydin Magerman (27), Roleen Lessing (31), and Anti-Gang Unit constables Thapelo Tlomatsane and Sphiwe Sibeko, were killed.

The state opposed bail for all four accused, arguing that investigations were still under way and that evidence, including CCTV footage and witness statements, implicated the accused.

Investigators are still awaiting outstanding forensic and ballistic reports, including information relating to firearms and ammunition allegedly linked to the case.

The state requested additional time to complete the investigation and asked that the matter be postponed to December 1.

Strict bail conditions

Bail conditions for Crawford and Ford include that neither may leave Gauteng without permission and must report to the Reiger Park Police Station every Monday and Friday between 06:00 and 18:00.

They must report with their identity documents and comply with the requirement until the case is finalised, unless they are attending court.

They are also prohibited from interfering with or contacting witnesses and other people connected to the investigation.

The court stressed that the bail decision does not amount to a finding of guilt or innocence.

Collis and Meyer will remain in custody, while Crawford and Ford remain on bail as the investigation continues.
