Two accused set for bail hearing in Reiger Park killings [VIDEO]

Accused number one, Regan Collis, has asked the court to be transferred to a correctional facility closer to his family.

The second accused in the deadly Reiger Park shooting, 24-year-old Jamal Meyer, made his first appearance in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court today (August 18), where he was ordered to join accused number one, Regan Collis, when the matter returns on August 25.

The 24-year-old Meyer faces the same charges as 23-year-old Collis. Four counts of murder, one of attempted murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and two counts of unlawful possession of firearms.

The matter was postponed to August 25 for the accused to be joined in the case and for their formal bail applications. The State has indicated it will oppose bail.
The four murder charges each carry a possible life sentence if the accused are convicted.

Detention dispute
During Tuesday’s brief proceedings, attorney Samkele Kuzani, who represents both accused, asked that Collis be transferred from Modderbee Correctional Services to the Boksburg correctional facility, which is closer to his family.

However, the State opposed the request, citing valid reasons for keeping Collis at Modderbee and an existing J7 court order authorising his detention there.
The court ordered that the J7 remain valid until August 25, when the State will present its reasons and the detention issue will be addressed.

The case stems from the August 7 Reiger Park shooting in which Jaydin Magerman, 27, Roleen Lessing, 31, and SAPS Anti-Gang Unit members Constables Thapelo Tlomatsane, 29, and Sphiwe Sibeko, 28, were killed.
The two accused remain in custody.
