Body of missing Benoni businessman found

Both dockets relating to the separate crime scenes will be sent to the Benoni SAPS and the investigation into the murder will be centralised.

Spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station Captain Nomsa Sekele has confirmed the search for missing Benoni businessman, John Hamilton George Banks (62), has been called off.

According to information received from the Vulnerable Citizens Support Initiative (VCSI), a missing persons investigation was launched after Banks was reported as missing.

He was last seen leaving his Benoni Small Farms home at 07:00 on July 20.

“On the morning of July 21, the victim’s burnt-out vehicle, a Land Rover,  as found in Birchleigh,” said Sekele.

“Later in the day, officers of the Bedfordview Police Station responded to a call in Elandsfontein, where a burnt body had been found. An inquest docket was opened.”

Sekele confirmed that through forensic investigation, the remains were positively identified as being those of Banks.

“A request has been sent to both Norkem Park and Bedfordview SAPS to have the dockets relating to the two crime scenes transferred to our station for the investigation to be centralised,” she said.

“A case of murder is being investigated but at this stage, it is unclear what transpired leading up to the victim’s disappearance and what the motive for the crime was.”
