Reiger Park police confiscate illegal firearms, arrest suspects

Reiger Park police said more operations will be done to reclaim their streets from criminals.

Members of Ekurhuleni District Crime Intelligence, Reiger Park SAPS, Tactical Response Team and EMPD conducted an intelligence-driven operation in Reiger Park that led to arrests and confiscation of firearms.

According to district police spokesperson Neldah Sekgobela, they conducted the operation to follow up on information regarding Lesotho nationals allegedly involved in robberies and illegal mining activities in the Joe Slovo informal settlement.

The operation was led by Reiger Park station commander Lieutenant Colonel Bongani Dube.

They arrested four suspects for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Another man was apprehended for having explosives and contravening the Reserve Bank Act as he had bank notes with ink, suspected to be stolen in an ATM bombing.

Ekurhuleni District Commissioner Major General Anna Sithole commended the efforts of the teams in addressing the proliferation of unlicensed firearms by illegal miners in the area.

In another incident, while police officers were doing a patrol, they arrested a 26-year-old man at a veld in the vicinity of the Reiger Park flats for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Dube commended SAPS TRT, EMPD TRT, local detectives and members for a job well done.

“We are in the right direction to reclaim our streets from the criminals. We will do more operations this year, and we are going to leave no stone unturned until all criminals are behind bars,” he said.
