#FakeCops: What to do if you suspect you’ve been stopped by bogus police

Be more observant when you encounter this situation as this can also assist with further investigations.

Following a recent warning by Boksburg SAPS about criminal gangs masquerading as police officers in Boksburg and surrounding areas, the police offer tips for motorists to avoid falling victim to these bogus officers.

In eight of the recent hijacking/robbery cases reported, three were committed by criminals posing as police officers. They either use police blue lights or dress in police uniform to deceive their unsuspecting targets.

What to do if you suspect you’ve been stopped by fake police:
Speaking to Boksburg Advertiser during a recent Operation Shanela in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni SAPS district commissioner Major General Anna Sithole confirmed criminal gangs labelled a ‘blue-light gang’ are operating in the district.

She urged members of the public to remain vigilant and know their rights when stopped by law enforcement.
Sithole advised: “Motorists should be aware that they have the right to drive to a safe place such as a police or petrol station. They will follow you if they are real police officers.”
She also pointed out that genuine police officers must wear a hat and a name tag on their uniform. They will also have appointment cards.

Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Ntsako Ledwaba also advised that motorists need to call the nearest police station and be more observant when they encounter this situation as this can also assist with further investigations.
Try to take note of basic details like the vehicle number plate, the exact location and other relevant detail that can help the police investigate these cases.
