Two nabbed for illegal cigs worth R250k

In an attempt to evade arrest and the confiscation of the contraband good, one of the suspects offered officers a bribe of R4 950 to look away.

An intelligence-driven operation by members of the EMPD led to a discovery of illicit cigarettes worth an estimated R250 000 at a supermarket in the Boksburg CBD.

According to City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, on January 6, members of the EMPD Specialised Services patrolling in Boksburg received a tip-off about a Cash and Carry shop that is dealing in suspected illicit cigarettes.
Acting on the received information, the team descended on the property in question where officers uncovered at least 1097 cartons of illicit cigarette packets in boxes. One suspect was placed under arrest.
In an attempt to evade arrest and the confiscation of the contraband goods, a man arrived and offered officers a bribe of R4 950 to look away. The no-nonsense officers arrested him on the spot for attempting to bribe officers of the law.

The pair was immediately taken to the Boksburg Police Station and was scheduled to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of possession and dealing in illicit cigarettes and attempting to bribe police officers.
