This came two weeks after EMPD officers recovered illegal firearms and arrested five illegal miners, who allegedly terrorised the public and opened fire at responding law enforcement agencies.

A man described as an illegal miner was killed and his accomplice was injured in a shootout with the EMPD Intervention Unit officers this morning.

The two were part of a heavily armed gang found carrying out illegal mining activities at an abandoned mine next to the Marathon informal settlement in Primrose.

According to EMPD liaison officer Thabiso Makgato, EMPD doing an early morning illegal mining operation in the area were confronted by a group of armed gangs.
Upon noticing the officers, the group of illegal miners opened fire on the approaching SAPS team using a rifle and handguns.
The police then returned fire, killing one and landing the other in the Tambo Memorial Hospital – where he is under police guard.

A shootout with EMPD officers killed one suspect and landed another in hospital – where he is under police guard.

The suspect with a rifle fled the scene, but four of his accomplices were apprehended and detained at the Primrose Police Station, where their unlicensed firearms were seized. Investigations continue.

On January 7, the police arrested five illegal miners after a shootout with them in the Dawn Park area.

The gang of miners found busy with their activities opened fire at responding law enforcement agencies responding to a complaint of a gang terrorising the community of the Lindelani informal settlement.
Following a shootout, officers recovered illegal firearms and live ammunition and arrested five illegal miners.

Acting chief of police, Julius Mkhwanaz, reiterated that the metro would not allow a repeat of the Stilfontein case in the CoE.
“Minimal force will be used to tackle these criminal syndicates because they are armed and dangerous,” said Mkhwanazi.
