Man who stabbed girlfriend jailed for 15 years
The woman was stabbed following an argument with her boyfriend.
Jongikhaya Pendu (41) from Ramaphosa was sentenced to 15 years behind bars and declared unfit to possess a firearm, at the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on February 26.
He pleaded guilty and was found guilty on the same day.
The conviction stems from an incident where Pendu stabbed his girlfriend on Ramaphosa Road Reserve on April 13.
Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Constable Johannes Msimanga said officers found a 40-year-old woman on the ground with a stab wound to her neck. She was transported to the hospital.
“The victim told the police that she and her boyfriend, Pendu, were on their way home from a shebeen when he started accusing her of sleeping with a family member, and they started arguing,” said Msimanga.
On April 14, investigating officer Teboho Nyaole went to the hospital to check on the victim.
“While our officer was talking to a nurse about the victim, Pendu arrived and they then both went to the ward she was in,” he said.
The victim told Nyaole that he was the boyfriend who had stabbed her, and he was arrested on the spot.
In a statement, Pendu explained what happened on the day.
“We were walking from the tavern, intoxicated, when an argument started between the complainant and me about my cousin. My cousin had approached me earlier about my girlfriend and told me she had been asking him for money.
“I then confronted her about it. I lost my temper, took out a knife that I had in my possession, and stabbed her,” he said.
Station commander Lionel Chetty welcomed the hefty sentence and applauded the members for their good work, especially in the case of domestic violence.
Magistrate Ramufhufhi presided and prosecutor Khwela represented the State.
