MMA sensation to continue unbeaten record

He boasts a 2-0 winning record while his opponent has won one and lost one.

Boksburg mixed martial artist Matthew du Plessis will go hammer and tongs with Joel Smit during the Versus MMA Fight Night Six on August 12 at Casa Social da Madeira in Pretoria East.

The 18-year is on the preliminary card before the main event, which will feature six matches including the heavyweight bout between Neil Koch and Terrence Xinti Born.

With a record of 2-0 (won both fights via a first-round submission), he goes up against Smit who has a record of 1-1.

Du Plessis, who trains at SRK Combat Fitness by Gavin Harris and Richard van Tonder, started his MMA career as a four-year-old, winning the national juniors’ MMA title at the age of nine.

The Hoërskool Oostelig learner is inspired by Dricus ‘Stillknocks” du Plessis who competes in the UFC in America while the MMA blood runs in his family as his uncle, Robert ‘9mm’ Swanepoel, competes in the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC).

He has belts in kickboxing, boxing, Brazillian Jiu Jutsi and MMA and has won more than 100 medals in his amateur career.

“I want to thank all my coaches, managers and everyone involved in making me a better competitor and Shana Lee for looking after my diet for this fight. I want to compete in the world championships before I turn pro,” he said.

“I would like to thank the staff at Choof Vapes, Umanie Engineering, T & T Hydraulics and Engineering, WVT Engineering, E & H Cranes, Health World Fitness Gym and Profile Cutting Service for their continued support.

“I want to thank my mom and dad for their support. I will also be dedicating this fight to my late grandfather Dave van der Westhuizen and Aunt Joey Geldenhuys,”

Du Plessis is urgently looking for a supplement and fuel sponsor as he seeks to make his dream come true.
Anyone interested in assisting him can reach him on 064 755 9693.
