Little progress on SAPS crash

The investigation is still ongoing.

Nearly seven months after a fatal accident on the R554 involving an official Boksburg North SAPS vehicle, there has been limited progress in the investigation.

According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson, Robbie Raburabu, the investigation is still incomplete.

When asked what was still outstanding, Raburabu said they would issue a media statement once the investigation was complete.

In September, Raburabu said the matter had not yet gone to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision because the post-mortem report, vehicle technical report and a few statements were still outstanding. Raburabu previously confirmed that IPID is investigating a case of culpable homicide.

The Toyota Yaris involved in the accident with the police vehicle on April 22 had broken down and was being pushed on the road. A Ford Ranger was also reportedly hit by the Yaris after the impact of the collision.

Kamokgelo Gama (22), who was pushing the car, died of head and chest injuries.

Furthermore, IPID said they are aware of allegations of a bottle of alcohol found in the SAPS vehicle and were investigating this, too.

The uncle of the deceased, Bongani Mtshali, previously said the family had received no updates on the case since the accident.
Mtshali added that Gama’s mother is not coping.

“She has been sick since the accident and in and out of hospitals. The situation is bad. Thembisile was even admitted to a psychiatric hospital.”
He said Thembisile was about to lose her job and home because of how badly the situation had affected her.

“She works at Bertha Gxowa Hospital and, due to her illness, has exceeded her leave by 42 days, which is now unpaid. We have tried to engage with hospital management to ask them to consider reversing the decision, but they are unwilling to.

“Due to the pressure Thembisile is subjected to, she is thinking of resigning and selling her house. We fear the worst as a family and want Thembisile to get help with her situation.”
