Big blow for Boksburg SPCA as Facebook account is suspended

The public is encouraged to support the society’s Christmas Cheer Fund.

The Boksburg SPCA is deeply disappointed by the unexpected suspension of its Facebook page, ‘Boksburg SPCA New,’ and urges the community to follow its ‘Boksburg SPCA Charity Shop’ page instead.

Society secretary Sue Beadon explained that the ‘Boksburg SPCA New’ Facebook page, which plays a vital role in helping the society find homes for animals available for adoption and promote their fundraisers, was taken down about two weeks ago due to “impersonation”.

“It appears some people are copying Facebook pages. We’re not sure if it’s an SPCA hater or just random individuals.

“They created a page that closely resembles ours and reported us to Facebook, claiming that we were impersonating them. I don’t know why Facebook cannot check the number of followers we have, which is over 50 000,” said Beadon, who is behind the success of the Facebook page.

She added that the suspension has had a significant impact on the society.

“Losing 50 000 followers has been devastating for the SPCA in terms of marketing fundraisers and animals that are up for adoption. This will also affect our 75th birthday coming up in February.

“We’ve been in daily contact with Facebook, but so far, we haven’t had any success. At some point, we will have to decide whether to create a new page, which would mean starting from scratch,” said Beadon.

The society is using the Boksburg SPCA Charity Shop Facebook page in the meanwhile, which has over 3 000 followers.

Furthermore, Beadon reminds the public that this is their last chance to support its Christmas Cheer Fund, which ends in the first week of January.

Again this year, the SPCA aims to raise R100 000.

This year’s projects include spay cradles, a clinic theatre light, dry and wet cat and dog food, cat carriers and traps, dog crates, collars, leashes and medical supplies.

No donation is too small.

The SPCA urges residents and its followers on social media to donate R75 in celebration of the society’s birthday.

To donate, visit the society on Railway Street or deposit your donation into their bank account:
