The CoE has responded to the Boksburg Advertiser’s enquiry regarding Cason residents’ concerns about illegal dumping and fires in velds, saying the Department of Environmental Resources and Waste Management was unaware of the issue.
Concerned residents, who wished to remain anonymous, complained about the illegal dumping and burning of items like electricity cables and tyres in a veld.
They said the smell of the smoke was unbearable and that the illegal dumping caused a rodent infestation.
This publication recently visited one of the dump sites on the corner of Cason Road and 14th Avenue and saw illegal dumping and evidence of materials being burnt there.
The residents claimed they tried reporting the matter to the police, the EMPD and the metro but to no avail.
City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini explained the municipality’s by-laws regarding this issue: “In terms of Section 48(4) of the CoE’s Integrated Waste Management by-law, 2021, no person may burn waste in a public or private place, for the purpose of disposing of that waste and/or salvaging other products, such as scrap metal.”
Dlamini added that a person convicted of such an offence could receive a fine not exceeding R100 000 or imprisonment for up to three years.
How to report these incidents
Dlamini said residents can email their complaints to EnviroCrime&complaints@ekurhuleni.gov.za or Sifiso.ndwandwe@ekurhuleni.gov.za or call 011 999 3376.
