Tambo Memorial Hospital celebrates Nurses Day with appreciation and wellness focus

Nurses at Tambo Memorial Hospital were celebrated on May 22 for their tireless service, with a strong message: caring for nurses builds stronger communities and economies.

Tambo Memorial Hospital commemorated International Nurses Day on May 22 under the global theme ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies’.

The celebration honoured the invaluable role nurses play in patient care, disease prevention, and health education in the community.

The event brought together nurses from various departments to celebrate their profession and reflect on the meaning behind their nursing oath.

According to Zoliswa Nzeku, the hospital’s spokesperson, the day was marked by appreciation, unity, and a renewed sense of purpose.

“Nurses came together to reflect on their oath and were appreciated for their tireless efforts. It was a moment to acknowledge the hard work and dedication they show every single day.”

Nzeku said the gathering aimed to remind nurses of their importance not only in the hospital but also in the broader healthcare system.

“As the first point of contact for many patients, nurses are vital in delivering compassionate care, educating the public, and promoting healthy living.

A key highlight of the event was the presence of the Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) unit from the provincial health department.

“Their team provided motivational talks and encouraged the nursing staff to look after their own well-being. They emphasised that self-care is essential for sustaining long-term dedication in such a demanding profession.”

She emphasised that the theme shines a spotlight on the need to invest in nursing staff, not just for improved patient outcomes but for the strengthening of health systems and economies worldwide.

“By caring for nurses and ensuring they are supported and valued, the foundation of healthcare becomes stronger and more sustainable.”
