Meet St Francis Care Centre’s new manager

Ntjona's priorities are clear- sustainability, staff empowerment, and teamwork.

The St Francis Care Centre begins a new chapter under the capable leadership of Relebohile Ntjona – fondly known as Lebo – who recently took over as centre manager following the retirement of long-serving stalwart Tilly Brouwer.

The 41-year-old Windmill Park resident brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to community development.

“This centre is close to my heart. It’s not just a job, it’s a calling,” Lebo said.

Lebo first joined St Francis in 2015 through an HIV counselling and testing programme that focused on taking vital services directly to the community.

“That work opened my eyes to the real impact we can have when we go beyond the clinic walls.”

At the time, Lebo led a team of 16 outreach workers tasked with identifying and supporting individuals at risk, particularly those unaware of their HIV status until they were already in advanced stages of illness.
“The aim was to encourage early testing, start treatment sooner, and help people live longer, healthier lives,” he explained.

Recognised for his contribution, Lebo was later recruited by Shout-It-Now, a US-funded NGO operating across South Africa.

“I was humbled when they called. I spoke to Tilly about it, and she supported me fully. She said I was still young, with a long career ahead, and this would be an opportunity for growth. That meant a lot.”
Lebo spent the next several years leading community outreach across multiple provinces.

Now, he’s returned, not just as a team member, but as its leader.

“I’m stepping into big shoes. Tilly dedicated over 20 years to this place, and the standard she set is incredibly high. But I’m here to continue that legacy and ensure St Francis not only survives, but thrives.”
His priorities are clear: sustainability, staff empowerment, and teamwork.

“This centre relies heavily on external funding, which can be unpredictable. We need to secure ongoing support to keep the lights on, support our staff, and serve every patient and child who walks through our doors.”

He is also deeply committed to upskilling his team.

“Empowered staff are our most valuable resource. Times are changing – technology, systems, needs – and we must stay ahead. My focus is on developing our people so they can continue delivering quality care.”

Lebo’s approach is hands-on and team-oriented. As he takes up the mantle, he is determined to uphold the centre’s constitution, strengthen its values, and carry forward its mission with integrity.

“I’ve been mentored by the best. Now it’s my turn to give back, not only to the centre, but to the staff, the patients, and the wider community. I’m honoured to be back where it all started.”
