Du Toit family holds on to hope as murder case against Swanson continues in court
The family of Klaas du Toit say they are still waiting for justice as the man accused of his 2023 murder appears again in court.
The family of Klaas du Toit say they remain hopeful that justice will be served as court proceedings continue following his murder in Impala Park in 2023.
Outside the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on June 18, where Evan Swanson (75) reappearance in connection with the killing, Klaas’ mother, Magda Potgieter, could not hold back her tears.
“It’s very emotional to face this. It’s hard to look the accused in the eye. I’m on medication to stay calm, but I’m glad the case is finally moving forward. I believe justice will be done, even if it’s slow,” she said.
Potgieter, who travels from the Cape to attend the proceedings, added that she was relieved the accused was restricted from the area where the incident occurred.
She said it remains traumatic to pass the scene where Klaas lost his life.

Describing her son, Potgieter recalled, “He was a loving, gentle person with a big heart. I can still hear how he always used to greet me when he video-called from overseas. There was so much love and warmth in his voice. He always ended every call with, ‘I love you, Ma’. The longing for my child is unbearable. Father’s Day was especially emotional for all of us.”
Klaas’s twin brother, Roelf, said Klaas’ daughter is coping but still struggles emotionally.
“We’re trying to keep her busy, and she’s taking part in extra-mural activities. It’s still difficult for her, but we can see progress,” he said.
Swanson previously indicated to the court that the shooting was in self-defence.
The case will continue on October 16.
