Protect your pet against the cold

Read on to see how you can keep your furry friends safe this season.

As winter tightens its icy grip, the Boksburg SPCA is urging the community to take urgent steps to protect their pets from the cold.

Contrary to the popular belief that cats and dogs are naturally resistant to low temperatures because of their fur, Boksburg SPCA manager Vicky Finnemore reminds the public: “If you’re feeling cold, they are feeling cold.”

Essential cold weather pet care tips
Keep your pets indoors
The safest and warmest place for your pets during winter is inside your home. Animals can suffer from hypothermia and frostbite just like humans.

Provide enclosed outdoor shelters
If you absolutely cannot keep your pets inside, they must be given an enclosed shelter with lots of warm blankets.

Check water and food regularly
Water bowls can freeze over, and pets may need more calories to generate body heat. Make sure their food and water are accessible and fresh.

Limit outdoor time
Even active pets like dogs should have limited outdoor time in the early mornings and late evenings when temperatures are at their lowest.

Keep an eye on stray animals
If you see an animal struggling in the cold, report it to the Boksburg SPCA immediately.

The society can be contacted on on 067 409 4267 or 083 763 6311.
