ERU falls short in thriller Merlin league final
Nigel edges ERU in a tight Merlin League final.
In a heart-stopping Valke Merlin League final recently played in Nigel, East Rand United (ERU) were narrowly edged 26–25 by the hosts, ending their title hopes dramatically.
ERU started the match strongly, putting the first points on the board with two converted tries. Nigel responded with a converted try and a penalty, leaving the halftime score at 14–10 in ERU’s favour.
The referee issued a total of five cards during the match, one red for the home team and four yellow cards for the men from Reiger Park, reflecting the intensity of the contest.
The second half saw both sides trade tries in a tightly contested battle, but it was the home side who ultimately secured victory by a single point, breaking ERU hearts at the final whistle.
“We are disappointed in the result. The team played well and worked hard. We started strong, but a few costly errors and some decisions didn’t go our way. We might have lost the game, but we haven’t lost heart,” said ERU coach Godfrey Mbangeni.
He singled out outside centre Wyclef Vlitoor for another outstanding performance, while also acknowledging the off-field challenges his squad faced this season. “There were struggles like transport issues and getting players to practice regularly, but even with all that, they gave everything. What a season it’s been. Battles fought, lessons learned, and memories made. From the first whistle to the last try, we gave it everything. This was more than just rugby; it was heart, family, and pride. A great season and the start of something even greater. Until next time, stronger, faster, hungrier.”
Though they did not bring home the cup, ERU can hold their heads high after a spirited campaign that showcased moments of brilliance and clear development across the squad.
