Mall responds to reports of alleged robbery incidents

“If incidents are not reported, we may not be aware of them – unless distorted versions later surface via social media.”

East Rand Mall has responded to reports of robberies that allegedly took place at the mall.

Management responded to Boksburg Advertiser’s request for comment on a social media post warning people about apparent robbers targeting women who are shopping alone at the mall.

The message read: ‘Be aware of the robbery currently happening at East Rand Mall targeting women who are shopping alone. There are two males who will approach you and at gunpoint ask you to withdraw all the money you have and give them all your personal passwords/ pins and your banking cards, cellphone and other belongings. They will also take all your shopping bags and leave you with nothing. In this week of August 18 – August 23 they have robbed three woman”.

While East Point has not officially responded to our request for comment, management at the East Rand Mall said they were aware of the post circulating on social media.
“East Rand Mall management is aware of the concerns circulating on various social media platforms, however, we can confirm that the reported robberies did not occur at East Rand Mall.

“The safety and security of our shoppers, tenants, and staff remains our top priority, and we take any allegations of criminal activity extremely seriously.
“As of this time, no formal reports matching the described incidents have been received by our on-site security personnel or centre management.
“We urge shoppers to report any suspicious or criminal activity directly to our security control room or management office so that appropriate steps can be taken immediately,” said management.
“If incidents are not reported in this way, we may not be aware of them – unless distorted versions later surface via social media.”

Here is how the mall handles reported cases
It is standard practice at the mall to escalate all reported criminal incidents to the law enforcement.
“We work closely with SAPS and private security partners to ensure rapid response and thorough investigation of all reported matters.

“In the absence of any formal reports related to the alleged robberies, no cases have been referred to the police by our team.
“Should any shopper come forward with specific details, we will not only investigate internally, but also ensure that the information is shared with the SAPS as per legal obligations.”

What shoppers should do to report a crime at the mall
• Immediately notify any security officer on-site or approach the security control room.
• Contact the mall management office.
• Report the incident directly to the SAPS.
