Body with gunshot wound found in hole

A murder inquiry has been launched after a man was found dead in a hole in Boksburg.

Boksburg police are investigating the murder of a man whose body was found in a gaping hole in the Jerusalem informal settlement, near Witfield, on September 30.

The deceased, identified as Wandise Thakathi, had bullet wounds to his face. Community members who spotted the body flagged down a passing police van to report the gruesome discovery.
The Ekurhuleni SAPS Water Police and Diving Services, along with K9 Search and Rescue, were dispatched to retrieve the body from the hole.

Paramedics declared Thakathi dead at the scene.
It is still unclear how the man’s body ended up in the hole, and the motive for the killing remains unknown. His body was taken to the Germiston State Mortuary for further investigation.
Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact the Boksburg police.

Police spokesperson Grant Giblin explained that high-angle equipment and rope techniques were used to recover the body from the mineshaft. A member was lowered approximately 15 to 20 metres into the collapsed site to secure the body in a stokes basket before it was hoisted out.
