Police seize truckload of copper cables

The driver allegedly told police the consignment had been transported from the Democratic Republic of Congo and was destined for several scrapyards in the city.

Boksburg North police recently intercepted a truck transporting a large consignment of suspected stolen copper cables and busbars believed to have been smuggled into South Africa.

According to information obtained from well-placed sources, the load was seized and two suspects were taken into custody at the Boksburg North SAPS. They face multiple charges, including possession of suspected stolen copper, tampering with essential infrastructure, resisting arrest and contravening the Customs and Excise Act 91 of 1964.

The interception occurred on November 23 when officers stopped a suspicious truck at the corner of Atlas and Paul Smith roads in Anderbolt. Upon inspecting the vehicle, police discovered 119 sacks filled with stripped copper cables, copper busbars and other copper components.

The driver allegedly told police the consignment had been transported from the Democratic Republic of Congo and was destined for a scrapyard in Anderbolt as well as other local businesses.
The suspects, both identified as Malawian nationals, were scheduled to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
Police had not responded to requests for additional information at the time of going to press.
