Local SANBS beats December target
Boksburg donors exceeded December's blood target, but the need continues.
Despite December being one of the most challenging months for blood donations, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) Boksburg Branch ended the festive season on a positive note by exceeding its blood collection target.
According to local donor practitioner Peter Mafela, the Boksburg branch had a target of 2 546 units for December and successfully collected 2 574 units.

The branch surpassed its goal despite the holiday rush, school closures and many residents travelling out of town.
Mafela praised the community for stepping up during the festive season but warned that blood stocks, particularly Group O, remain in demand.
“While we are grateful for the support we received in December, the current SANBS Group O blood stock only covers four days. We are requesting donors to come through so that we can increase the current blood stock.”
Group O blood is especially important as it is the most commonly used blood type and can be given to patients of any blood group in emergencies.
SANBS has once again urged regular and new donors to donate blood, reminding the public that the need for blood does not slow down after the festive season.
Hospitals continue to rely on a steady supply for emergencies, surgeries, accident victims and patients with chronic conditions.
Residents who are healthy and meet the donation requirements are encouraged to visit their nearest SANBS donor centre or mobile blood drive to help ensure that lifesaving blood is available when it is needed most.
