ATM’s John Senona elected as new council speaker
Senona secured 94 votes to be the new Ekurhuleni speaker.
The City of Ekurhuleni council has a new speaker of council, John Senona from the African Transformation Movement (ATM).
Senona, from the one-seat party, defeated EFF’s councillor Nkululeko Dunga in the elections held on March 5. Senona received 94 votes, and Dunga got 33 votes.
Councillors voted after the then speaker, Dora Mlambo, stepped down from her position to assume a new role as MMC for Economic Infrastructure and Development, as part of Mayor Doctor Xhakaza’s recent reshuffle of his mayoral committee.
Speaking to journalists after his victory, the new speaker said he is committed to serving residents and being responsible in every aspect.
“As a speaker, I am ready to serve and commit myself to the residents by ensuring that councillors are held responsible for their actions,” said Senona.
