Boksburg shootings: Third execution-style murder in weeks leaves communities on edge

Fear is mounting after a man was gunned down outside his home, the latest in a string of deadly shootings.

A man has been shot and killed outside his yard in Jerusalem informal settlement, just a week after an execution-style murder in the nearby Angelo informal settlement.

According to police, the latest incident occurred on March 21 along Wit Deep Road, where a man identified as Manelisi Mdluli was shot twice in the head and died at the scene.

Boksburg SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Ntsako Ledwaba said officers responded to reports of a shooting and found the victim lying in a pool of blood.

“He had sustained gunshot wounds to the head and left ear,” said Ledwaba. “Police recovered two spent cartridges and one projectile at the scene. The motive for the killing is unknown.”

The victim’s body was transported to a state mortuary for further investigation.

Two recent killings in nearby Angelo settlement deepen fears among residents

The killing follows another fatal shooting on March 13 in the Angelo informal settlement, where a man was shot eight times and died at the scene.

Preliminary findings indicated that the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and back. Paramedics declared him dead at the scene.

In a separate incident last month, a businessman was gunned down outside his supermarket and tavern near the Angelo Hotel on Main Reef Road.

The victim, identified as Zelalem Desta Abera, was reportedly ambushed shortly after closing his business late at night and was shot six times.

No arrests have been made in any of the cases, and police investigations are ongoing.

Residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, described a growing climate of fear in the area. Some alleged the presence of armed groups terrorising communities, leaving residents feeling unprotected in their own homes.

Police said they could not confirm these claims but urged residents to report any criminal activity through official channels.

Anyone with information that could assist in the investigations is urged to contact Boksburg SAPS on 010 497 9900 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
