Volkspele keeps Afrikaans tradition alive in Boksburg
Volkspele brings people from across South Africa together in Boksburg.
The annual Inspan Volkspelelaer ‘saamtrek’ brought participants from Bela-Bela in Limpopo, Secunda in Mpumalanga, Pretoria, the Free State and other parts of the country together through song and dance at the Trans 50 Witfield Park Retirement Village on September 12.
Volkspele is an Afrikaans traditional form of folk dancing accompanied by music and singing.
During the gathering, participants took part in organised dances and ‘samesang’ (communal singing), while some dressed in colourful traditional Voortrekker outfits.
Marita van der Walt, of the Inspan Volkspelelaer, said she appreciated the way the event preserved the originality of the Afrikaans tradition.
“I love that this event keeps our traditions alive,” she said.
“Seeing people gather from far and wide to participate warms my heart.”
The afternoon included an opening session, Volkspele, communal singing and more dancing.
Inspan meets every Tuesday at Trans 50 Witfield Park Retirement Village, on the corner of Pitout and Kettles streets in Witfield.
