The Hub East Rand Mall fed 300 learners at the Ekukhanyeni Primary School on November 17 as part of their festive season gesture.
Store manager Sthembiso Ncokwane said it was a chance to give back to the community.
“We want to make a difference in our community. We decided on Ekukhanyeni after a colleague told us it is an independent school that normally runs a soup kitchen because a lot of its learners are from disadvantaged families.
“It is our first charity drive but we would like to continue helping as we know people are struggling as a result of Covid-19,” said Ncokwane.
“South Africans must show the world that we are united. All those who have the means to help must do it now because people need help now more than ever.
“If we make helping each other a normality in South Africa, the young ones will also learn from us and continue doing it in future.”
The principal of Ekukhanyeni Primary, Mapula Gwangwa, said she is happy to see a company assisting them.
“Our learners are not used to such gestures. The Hub came at the right time and on a good day because learners are writing exams. Now they will have a nutritional meal before or after they write their exams.
“Thank you to the company and hope it will extend its helping hand to other communities and schools. We need more of these charity drives so the communities can be helped,” said Gwangwa.
