IEB matriculants set the bar high

The learners achieved outstanding results.

Woodlands International College
Building on its enviable 22-year academic track record and the stellar results of the Class of 2022, Woodlands again bettered its bachelor’s pass rate to a formidable 98.3% (2022: 96.1%) and preserves its 100% pass rate.

Priding itself on its small, personalised classes and high teacher-to-student ratio, the college’s matric group of 58 learners delivered an impressive 96 distinctions and 128 B-symbols, between them.
At a ceremony held to release the results on Thursday morning, senior college principal Hazel Bonaretti remarked, “Naturally, we are thrilled by the extremely strong showing of our learners. Importantly, children genuinely look forward to coming here – it’s a place where lifelong friendships are formed and personal, unique value systems encouraged.”

Four learners exceeded the 85% average level:
• Micaela Rodrigues (90%), who achieved a full house of seven distinctions (and top 1% of IEB candidates for business studies).
• Ricardo da Costa (89%), also with a full house of seven distinctions.
• Malachi Lazarus (87%), with six distinctions.
• Thaksheel Jairam (85%), with five distinctions (and top-1% of IEB candidates for business studies).

A further four learners – Muhammed Abed; Tyllan Naicker; Ting Yu (Steven) Lin (top-1% of IEB candidates for Mandarin, second additional language); and Mohammed Saib – vaulted the 80% average level, resulting in an impressive 14% of the total group exceeding this threshold.

Alexandra Russell placed in the top 1% cent of candidates for tourism, catapulting 7% of Woodlands’ Matriculants into the illustrious top 1% nationally.

Micaela will be going on to study chartered accounting, on a full scholarship from an international accountancy firm, while Malachi will be pursuing a BSc in Biomedical Science. Both Ricardo and Thaksheel will be reading for degrees in actuarial science.

Senior college director Audrey Matthews said: “Woodlands stands tall with its enviable track record of delivering outstanding multi-disciplinary educational curricula designed to empower the young people of our nation.”

As they stand poised on the cusp of their careers or further studies, the directors and staff of Woodlands bid farewell to the departing matriculants and wish them well in their future endeavours.

CBC
Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) is celebrating a 100% pass rate and 96% of its learners earned a bachelor’s pass.

The top six out of 50 candidates were as follows:
• Darren Simon achieved eight distinctions for accounting, Afrikaans, English, life orientation, life sciences, mathematics, physical science and further studies mathematics (Maths AP).
• Mohlodi Masekoane (six distinctions)
• Kyle Witthaus (six distinctions)
• Aiden Bornman (five distinctions)
• Caiden Marais (five distinctions)
• Sarcia Mafuta (four distinctions and top 1% for Geography in IEB).

Speaking about his incredible results, Simon told the Boksburg Advertiser putting in hard work and listening in class was his key to success.
“It feels like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders once you receive your results. I actually didn’t expect to get eight distinctions. It was a pleasant surprise. Things can be difficult at times, but keeping the end goal in sight kept me motivated,” the Parkrand resident said.

The top student, whose favourite subject is physical science, pointed out that the support of his family meant a lot to him.

Simon hopes to study medicine and has applied to different universities across the country.

“My dream is to specialise in orthopaedic surgery. I’ve always wanted to be in a position to help others,” he said.

Apart from achieving outstanding academic results, Simon also excelled on the sports field.
He played rugby for the school’s first rugby and cricket teams.

His advice to the Class of 2024: “Just enjoy it. The year goes by quicker than you think and will be over before you even realise it. There will be challenges, but you must embrace it. It’s you against you. It’s up to you if you want to do well.”
School principal Kandia Markoulides commended the learners for their exceptional results and thanked the high school teachers and parents for their assistance during the boys’ journeys at the school.

St Dominic’s
The school achieved a 100% pass rate and four placements in the top 1% of the IEB nationally, with the Class of 2023 obtaining 126 distinctions.

Executive headmaster Roger Loring extended his heartfelt congratulations to their 2023 matriculants and their parents on achieving these remarkable results.

“I understand the immense pressure that was placed on them. As the matric class during our 100th-year celebration, they were determined to maintain our legacy of excellence.
“They also felt the pressure of following up on the outstanding 2022 results. They haven’t failed to disappoint as they achieved an overall class average of 70%, a 100% pass, 100% tertiary pass and a 96% bachelor’s (University entrance) pass rate,” said Loring.

Loring said the school celebrate its top student, Nkanyezi Masemula, who achieved eight distinctions, as well as the four learners who achieved in the top 1 per cent in the country in a subject.
They are Caitlin Costa (visual arts 97%), Nkanyezi Masemula (isiZulu 95%), Dominique Janse van Rensburg (Afrikaans 94%) and Rebecca Smal (computer applications technology 91%).

“The 126 distinctions achieved by the class are to be commended. We are equally proud of every matric as the whole class achieved wonderful results. As a Catholic school, we pride ourselves on the quality of our education.

“It is hard work, dedication and persistence that ensures results such as these. Congratulations to our matrics, their parents and their teachers,” he added.

According to senior school principal Sharon Fitzgerald, these exceptional young women are reaping the rewards of their fortitude, grit and commitment.

“They are both an inspiration and an example to their younger ‘sisters’ at St Dominic’s. We wish them all of the very best as they continue their journey into tertiary studies and we hope they keep a piece of St Dominic’s in their hearts,” she pointed out.
