Sunward Park High school appoints new principal

The Brakpan resident aims to lead the school to new heights with discipline, excellence, and community spirit.

Sunward Park High School has officially appointed Nadia Walljee as its new principal, effective April 1, after serving in the role of acting principal since March 2023.

With a clear vision and passion for education, Walljee is determined to elevate the school’s standing, not only in the province but nationwide.
Walljee, who resides in Brakpan, said her appointment is not about personal achievement but rather a calling.

“Being a principal is not a title to boast about. It’s about accountability. God has entrusted me with over 2 300 learners, and how I lead, together with my school management team (SMT), will shape their futures,” she said.
Overseeing more than 100 staff members, Walljee is committed to creating a school environment that promotes excellence in academics, sport and character.

“I want learners to be disciplined, well-groomed, and ready for anything. Our focus is on quality results, and I want to introduce multi-certification opportunities so learners graduate not only with the NSC but with additional skills-based qualifications that prepare them for life. Furthermore, we aim to excel in sports, and we’re introducing new sports programmes that will surely thrill our learners.”

As an educator herself, Walljee continues to teach and believes in leading by example. She has introduced several strategic interventions, including compulsory extra classes, especially for the Grade 12 learners which began in January.

“We cannot afford to wait until the last minute. We are instilling a culture of early preparation and academic focus.”

Under her leadership as acting principal, the school has already seen improvements. Teachers at Sunward Park High have been recognised among the top in Ekurhuleni, an example to the school’s growing culture of excellence. Additionally, learners are achieving positive outcomes, further highlighting the school’s progress.

“Our teachers are hard-working and dedicated, and I want to continue fostering that energy. Our learners are doing well and we want to continue maintaining that standard.”

Walljee is also passionate about character development and community values.
“I want our learners to have manners, to greet others, pick up litter, and show respect. I want a school that is known for discipline, academic success, vibrant sports participation, and a happy atmosphere. I want the Sunward High to be not just a school but a family.”

Strengthening parental involvement is also high on her agenda, as well as forging collaborations with other schools. Sunward Park High currently has a twinning partnership with Reiger Park Secondary, which promotes knowledge sharing and academic support between schools.

“We are working with some of the schools with a goal to build a network that uplifts Ekurhuleni’s overall performance,” she explained.

Walljee began her teaching career in 2005 after graduating from UKZN. She joined Sunward Park High in 2006, and returned again in 2015 after a brief departure. She is currently pursuing further studies and describes herself as a natural workaholic.

“I was nicknamed ‘Ever Ready’ as a child, and that hasn’t changed. I know how to balance work and studies.”
