Craig Jansen, the principal of Lakeside Primary School, beams with pride as he reflects on his 13-year journey as the head of the school he once attended.

With a teaching career spanning 30 years, Jansen describes his path as one filled with passion, grace and stewardship, deeply rooted in his love for education and his commitment to the Reiger Park community.
“Teaching has always been my passion. Becoming the principal of the school where I was once a learner brings me so much joy. I always say my blood is green, and I’m proud of it.”

Jansen began his career at Lakeside as a mathematics teacher, quickly advancing to head of department for mathematics within a year. He later spent a year teaching English abroad, one of his major subjects, before returning to Lakeside.

Upon his return, he rose through the ranks, becoming deputy principal and eventually principal.
“Taking on the role of principal was surreal, especially as I found myself leading teachers who had taught me. That’s when I truly realised that this is my calling,” he reflects.

A mission to uplift
Jansen’s vision has always been to elevate Lakeside Primary, not only in academics but also in sports. Under his leadership, the school has achieved remarkable success, producing notable alumni like soccer star Bernard Parker.
“I wanted our school to be a place of excellence. Seeing our learners succeed is what drives me every day.”

Challenges
Despite the successes, Jansen acknowledges the significant challenges the school faces. Lakeside Primary is a no-fee school, catering to learners from disadvantaged backgrounds in Reiger Park and nearby informal settlements.
“The school is overcrowded and funding from the Gauteng Department of Education often falls short of meeting its needs. As a Section 21 school, we receive grants, but they are nowhere near enough to cover the basics.

“We constantly have to raise funds to cover essentials like teaching resources, photocopying, building maintenance, cleaning supplies, and more.”

Jansen highlights urgent needs, including proper athletics kits and equipment, an athletics track, verandas for waiting areas, a jungle gym, a mini pavilion, a guardhouse with an electric gate, projectors, and repairs to uneven surfaces on the school grounds.

Despite these obstacles, Jansen remains determined to see the school thrive. His dedication to Lakeside Primary, a school so close to his heart, continues to inspire learners and staff alike.
“My goal has always been to grow this school and give our learners the best opportunities possible,” he shared.
