I would like to commend on the publication: “Should fireworks be banned”.
I am not someone for fireworks, but I went twice to PE and they had the most spectacular fireworks in the early mornings of New Year’s Eve, on the beach.
You will not find that people in Port Elizabeth will do fireworks in their townships in December/January, as they do obey the law.
I always take good care of my dogs when I know that fireworks will be used, specially on New Year’s Eve.
But people just do not care about dogs, and they keep on setting off fireworks from December until mid-January.
And this is not just children; it’s adults.
When you ask people to stop (the fireworks) — especially when we enter the second week of January, it really becomes too much for my dogs to handle — they take it personally.
If people can just see what my dogs have to go through, then they will have sympathy with dog owners.
I suggest that they use their nearest park and give people a date and time for when they want to display more fireworks, other than New Year’s Eve.
Put up notices on places where people can see them, in order for us to take care of our dogs.
That way we can take responsibility for our dogs’ safety, because we were informed, but how can one take responsibility for their safekeeping if crackers are blown up at any time of the day and night until mid-January?
This is especially when you are not at home, but later return to find your dogs are injured or in distress.
I also understand that parents and grandparents want to entertain their children, but I also think they should take responsibility and explain to their children why fireworks cannot be displayed at any time one feels like it.
I always put up notices around my house that my dogs are scared of fireworks and that people should please take them into consideration.
Why can we not all enjoy the festivities – homeowners and their dogs?
If the people around me where I live in Delmore Park will inform me that they will display fireworks, I will gladly put my dogs inside the house, as I love my dogs, and will do the best I can to keep them safe.
