Steenkamp going to greater heights

Boksburg Athletic Club seems to have a real star in Tiaan Steenkamp.

The 17-year-old high jumper is in Donetsk, Ukraine, for the World Youth Championships.

He will be jumping in the qualifying rounds on Thursday, July 11, and will be hoping to be in the final on Saturday.

He qualified by clearing 2.03m four times over the course of the last year.

Steenkamp set the target of reaching the Youth Championships with his trainer Sonette Sanders last year, after clearing 1.95m to earn a bronze medal at the Southern Regions Championships in Zimbabwe.

The youngster then began to dazzle with the heights he cleared.

He cleared 2.07m while competing for his school EG Jansen at the Super 16 – Super Inter High in Germiston, in February.

He jumped 1.95m in extremely windy conditions when he won the South African Championships in East London.

Then he jumped 2.05m at the SA Club Championships.

At a meeting in Potchefstroom in May, he jumped 2.1m.
