Boksburg judo referee heading to Commonwealth Games

Atlas Judo Club referee Vince Maree (54) was named among top referees by Judo South Africa and the International Judo Federation to officiate at the 2016 Commonwealth Games in Port Elizabeth.

The games get under way on Friday, April 22 until April 27.

The selection could go a long way towards boosting Maree’s chances of officiating at the Olympic Games in the near future.

His résumé already includes participation at the South African Championships, Botswana Africa Zone 6 Games and now the Commonwealth Games.

An impressive outing in Port Elizabeth could see his ascension to a world championships participation.

“This is a highlight in my career,” he said.

Maree will also feature at the Commonwealth Games in a competing capacity in the men’s 100kg category.

Having won gold at the tournament before, he’ll be looking to emulate the achievement.
