Colin Sandwell scored a second-half consolation goal for CBC Old Boys in what was otherwise a comfortable 3-1 victory for town rivals Boksburg Football Club in their Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Veterans Division 2 2020/ 21 season opener in Bonaero Park on November 11.
With the local derby being CBC’s home game – the match was played in Bonaero Park, where CBC hosts its home games because they don’t have a home base in Boksburg.
Boksburg, who came flying out of the blocks, had put the game to bed by the half-time break, with the score line reading 3-0 in their favour courtesy of forwards Stephen Ogwayo, Peter Kumako and midfielder Cebo Gamede.
Commenting on the game, Blues player-coach Ernest Seforo paid respect to their rivals.
“The game was competitive, first games are always difficult due to player rustiness and a lot of injuries – age counts as well. Second half, the opponents were coming very strong but we just played more defensive,” he explained.
One of the leaders of the CBC team, Murray Lonsdale, rued his side’s missed opportunities.
“The match was much closer than the final result suggests. We played well at some stages during the game and we missed a penalty, so things could’ve turned out differently.
“It was a nice friendly game, normally a Boksburg-CBC derby game is a grudge match and the guys seemed to enjoy the match.”
The two teams were again in action on November 18, with Boksburg playing a sensational three-all draw with Springs Old Boys and CBC also playing to a one-all stalemate with Alberton.
After two games by the time the Advertiser went to print, Boksburg sat fourth on the 10-team table with four points while CBC lied ninth with a single point. Kempton Park are the early pacesetters and the only team to collect maximum points from their opening two matches.
