Tommy Gun, Volbrecht reunite

One of Gauteng’s most successful boxing duos, Tommy Oosthuizen and Harold Volbrecht, have reunited, as the boxer continues to work his way back to the boxing ring following a string of serious misdemeanours.

Oosthuizen, fresh from a nine-month prison stay, confirmed the news to the Advertiser, adding that former boxer-turned-lawyer Lovemore Ndou, who played an imperative part in the pugilist being finally out of prison, will be his agent when Oosthuizen’s career officially takes off again.

“I spoke to Harold and everything is set for next year. Lovemore will be managing my career and Harold will stay my trainer.”

Elaborating on the Ndou partnering, the former multiple International Boxing Organisation (IBO) champion explained: “I have decided the best choice for my future is in the squared ring without any doubt. There is only one clear choice for me to make for myself and my children’s future and that is leaving the management of my career in the hands of former two-time world champion Lovemore Ndou.

“This was not an overnight decision but I have really put a lot of thought into this and what I really believe would be the best for me on my path back to restoring my life and reaching my full potential. I am truly happy and sure of this decision.

“Myself, Lovemore and my lawyer, Charl van Tonder, are working on setting up a training schedule that will comply with the Department of Correctional Services so that we can get to business. I will be moving back to the light heavyweight division where I belong. Very excited for 2021.”

Volbrecht on the reunification

-Quizzed on why he agreed to train the lanky southpaw striker again, a scenario which seemed more unlikely by the day, the decorated trainer explained: “I’ve know him since he was a kid. It’s just one of those things which make sense,” said Volbrecht.

On what he thinks is at stake for Oosthuizen at this advanced stage of his boxing life and how far he thinks Oosthuizen can take his career, Volbrecht commented: “If Tommy really wants to get back to the top, he has to do it quickly because he’s 32 years old and he doesn’t have much time left. I’ve always believed boxing has an age limit and once you go past 30, you gradually begin to decline.

“Boxing is not what it was, I’ll be honest. There are very few good fighters. That being said, I think he can maybe get to another title and we will see how far he can go.”
