Seforo laments Covid impact as amateur football is forced to pause again

Boksburg Football Club coach Ernest Seforo has expressed his disappointment amid the second wave of the pandemic – which has forced the majority of amateur sports in the country to pause once again.

On January 8, the country’s football governing body, Safa, released a statement confirming the immediate postponement of non-professional football activities due to the rising numbers of Covid-19 infections.

“We wish to extend warm compliments of the New Year and offer comfort to those who have lost loved ones as our country is dealing with ravages of the pandemic.
” In light of the rising numbers of Covid-19 infections in the country, we hereby wish to advise members that non-professional football activities inclusive of training sessions, courses, workshops and matches are hereby suspended till further notice, by which time, the association through the Competitions Committee will make further risk assessments and advise,” read the press release.

“This extraordinary step is taken in the interest of the safety of players, technical staff, administrators, match officials, the media and all other personnel involved in the organisation and staging of matches and other football events.”

Speaking to the Advertiser, Seforo expressed: “We footballers are really affected, we can’t go to stadiums, and we cannot spend time with the boys in the field.”
According to Safa, professional football will continue under measures agreed upon with the National Soccer League.
