The Boksburg sporting arena shares its New Year’s resolutions
Boksburg sporting fraternity upbeat despite drought
The Advertiser knocked on the door of Boksburg’s sporting fraternity to see how they wish for this year to unfold.
With sports badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, athletes and coaches still have numerous reasons to remain optimistic as they explained below.
Cayden Truter (boxer)
This year I want to aspire to be the best at what I love: boxing.
Now that I am done with matric, I can focus all my time and energy on my boxing and with 2021 comes the new gym with the best coach, Colin Nathan, who is guiding me every step of the way.
I have the best sparring partners in the country, with multiple world champions in my stable. The support I have received from my sponsor, Robex SA, has been amazing, I want to make them proud this year. But it doesn’t end there: I am also going to study something that I love, it will improve my life because I believe it is important to have something behind your name.
So the goal is to take it step by step and to climb higher up the food chain, improving in whatever I’m doing until perfection and to be where I was born to be: the top. But it would not be possible without my parents and the love of the Lord.
Adam Forbes (Boksburg Cricket Club captain)
I’ve gone into this year with an open mind and to take things as they come. A goal that I am working to is to get way fitter and to just enjoy things as they come.
Benzi Tenza (athletics mentor/Qhubeka Athletic Club founder)
My resolution during the pandemic is to improve my health and wellness by staying fit and eating healthy to maintain a strong immune system.
I want to devote time to my family: watching the Covid-19 death numbers ticking upwards reinforces the importance of spending time with the family. Developing and strengthening Qhubeka Athletic Club and ensuring that members of the club stay healthy, fit and safe by providing them with weekly training programmes, as well as monitoring and supporting their training. I’m also looking at providing for the underprivileged children, e.g. children care centres.
Kieran Cree (baseball player)
At the moment with no baseball being allowed, what I’m doing is taking this time to get in the best shape I have even been in before the season or training begins.
I will also be running a small challenge to all the fellow players to post on Facebook how they’re keeping busy and in shape. I hope it takes off so we can see how others are doing and keeping active during this time.
Tristan Truter (boxer)
I want to be better in everything I do and involved in, including my relationship, my boxing and my studies.
Oluchi McMurray (water polo)
My New Year’s resolution is to put 110 per cent effort into everything I do.
Casey Arnold (CBC Old Boys skipper)
I don’t have any resolutions as yet, I’ve just been trying to get fit and strong with my crossfit. I don’t know what to do because there’s no coaching anymore, there’s no cricket, no rugby so when I actually know what is going on maybe I will know what my resolutions are.
Kiara Schutte (water polo)
My New Year’s resolution is to be happy and work/train harder than ever before to defy the barricade that Covid-19 has caused.
