Another Du Plessis on the rise in MMA

Du Plessis is honoured about the opportunity to represent his country.

MMA sensation Matthew du Plessis (19), a former Hoërskool Oosterlig learner, was recently included in the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (Gamma) South Africa senior team that will represent Gamma SA at the World Championships in Indonesia from December 6 to 14.

The event is expected to attract about 500 athletes from 80 countries.

The talented fighter started his MMA career as a four-year-old, winning the national juniors’ MMA title at the age of nine.

Du Plessis is inspired by UFC middleweight champion Dricus ‘Stillknocks’ du Plessis but MMA blood runs in the family.

His uncle, Robert ‘9mm’ Swanepoel, competes in the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC).

Du Plessis said he is honoured about the opportunity to represent his country.

“This is a life-long dream. I started combat sports at a young age and worked extremely hard for this. I’m very proud of myself, but I could not have achieved this without my parents and my team fight sport centre.

“I think the achievement will sink in more when I know I have the funds to get abroad. I would also like to Tony from Masonic Liquors for his support,” said Du Plessis, whose record is 2-1-0.

Du Plessis is urgently looking for sponsors to help make his Indonesia dream a reality.
