Black belt dream realised after 21 years on the mats
After more than two decades of dedication, discipline, and personal growth, a local martial artist reflects on earning his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and shares his hopes of inspiring the next generation.
For Brandon Naude, the journey to black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) wasn’t just a personal goal it was a life mission shaped over 21 years of grit, growth, and perseverance.
Earlier this month, the Benoni native achieved what every martial artist dreams of: earning his black belt under the guidance of a coach who walked a similar path.
“It’s a massive shock. You spend all this time working towards this one goal, and when it happens, it feels surreal. But to receive it from someone who has walked the same journey I have, it was an incredible honour. I’m immensely proud of it.”

Brandon’s passion for martial arts was sparked in childhood.
“I had always been interested in martial arts but I think it was the Ninja Turtles that really made me want to try it out. I found a gym close to home, and from that day on, I never looked back.”

What began as a playful curiosity turned into a lifelong commitment. Over the past two decades, Brandon has poured his energy into mastering an art known for its complexity and physical demands. But his journey was anything but easy.
“None of this came naturally to me. I had to work hard at every step. There were moments where things felt impossible. But the only way out was through. You just keep pushing, and eventually, the hard work pays off. The juice is always worth the squeeze.”
He said that the lessons he learned on the mats have extended into every area of his life.
“My entire routine revolves around training. I plan my days around when I can get on the mat. It’s not just a hobby, t’s a lifestyle. And professionally, BJJ has taught me resilience, patience, and the value of consistent hard work.”
Brandon highlighted that beyond the physical achievements, BJJ has offered him something even more meaningful.
“There’s something special about the people you train with. They become like a second family. You struggle together, grow together, and celebrate milestones together.”
He went on to say that after his black belt status, he is setting his sights on a new goal sharing his knowledge with others.
“I want to open a gym of my own in the near future. I want to create a safe and welcoming space where young people can learn and grow through this beautiful art. Jiu-Jitsu changed my life, and I know it can do the same for others.”
More than just teaching technique, Brandon hopes to offer mentorship and inspire others to commit to something that challenges and transforms them.
“My hope is that the next generation finds something in Jiu-Jitsu that pushes them to be better, that gives them confidence, and that surrounds them with a supportive community.”
