In a momentous ceremony held at the East Rand Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, coach Brandon Newman was awarded his second-degree black belt on January 25, marking a significant milestone in his martial arts journey.
After six years as a black belt and having dedicated 19 years to Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), Newman’s achievement reflects not only his skill but also his unwavering commitment to the sport.
The award was presented by Ashley Williams, Newman’s coach and close friend from Draig, Wales.
Williams expressed his pride in being back in South Africa to honour Newman, stating, “It’s been great to be back in South Africa and an honour to award Brandon for his incredible skills and his dedication to the sport, his academy and students.”
According to Anine Lombard, the recognition underscores the strong bonds formed within the BJJ community and highlights the importance of mentorship in martial arts.
“Newman’s journey began nearly two decades ago, during which he has cultivated a reputation as a dedicated instructor and competitor.
His leadership at East Rand BJJ has inspired countless students, fostering a culture of respect and perseverance.”
Lombard pointed the academy has become a hub for aspiring martial artists under his guidance.
She added that the event was attended by students, fellow practitioners and supporters who celebrated Newman’s accomplishments.
“As he embarks on this new chapter in his martial arts career, Newman remains committed to sharing his knowledge and passion for jiu-jitsu with others.
“This achievement not only elevates Newman’s status within the BJJ community but also serves as an inspiration to many who aspire to reach similar heights in their martial arts practice,” said Lombard.
