A blistering hat-trick from outside centre Wyclef Vlitoor headlined a dominant return for East Rand United as they thrashed Kempton Wolves 99–17 in a high-tempo Valke Merlin League second-round clash at Reiger Park.
United wasted no time reminding everyone why they’re a force in this league. From the first whistle, they played with speed, purpose, and precision — executing a wide attacking game plan that left Kempton chasing shadows.
“We had to come up with a way to play quickly and score more tries. The best way was to get the ball wide to our wings,” said head coach Godfrey Mbangeni.
The strategy paid off immediately. United opened the scoring with two early tries in the 5th and 10th minutes, setting the tone for what became a ruthless performance. Though they briefly allowed a try 15 minutes later, the home side didn’t let up, scoring four more tries to head into halftime 40–10.
Kempton managed one more try before the break, but the momentum was firmly with United.
“We stuck to the game plan. Tries came from dominant scrums and lineouts that were 50/50,” Mbangeni said.
The second half was all United. “We started so fast and hungry for more tries,” Mbangeni added. In just 10 minutes, they scored four more tries to extend the gap. Kempton’s final points came in the 66th minute, but it was too late.
With 14 minutes left and the score at 68–17, fresh legs were introduced to make one final push for the century. Four unanswered tries followed, taking United to a stunning 99 points, just shy of triple digits.
“I was impressed with how the boys showed up and stuck to what we planned. A lot of great individual performers and teamwork made a difference. This is our brand of rugby that we should be playing every game. Well done on the great win, but we need to stay humble and focus on our away game against VUT,” said Mbangeni.
