Pietroiusti podiums at mile championships
He clocked 05:00.5 for second place in the U11 to U13 boys' mile.
Matthew Pietroiusti delivered a sensational performance to earn a silver medal at the Athletics South Africa (ASA) 21km, 5km and road mile championships held in Phalaborwa on July 26.
The middle-distance talent clocked 5:00.5 in the boys’ U11 to U13 mile (1.6km), crossing the line just 14.6 seconds behind his Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) teammate Bohang Qhoaisa, who won the race in 4:45.6.
Philani Luthuli completed the podium, placing third in 5:05.3, securing a clean sweep for CGA in this event.
In the girls’ U11 to U13 mile, East Athletic Club’s Mahlatse Mamonyane delivered a strong performance to finish fifth in 5:50.1.
The race was dominated by Gauteng North athletes, with Miane de Clercq taking the win in 5:15.3. Janka van der Merwe followed in second with a time of 5:19.1, while Hailey Evans placed third in 5:24.2.
CGA’s Mia van Huyssteen finished fourth in 5:31.1, just ahead of Mamonyane.
