Atlasville Tennis Club crowns winners
The tennis club celebrated its top players during its annual in-house championship finals, which concluded with trophies, medals and a community braai.
The Atlasville Tennis Club recently held its annual in-house championship finals, crowning the best as this year’s top players based on their performances in the competition.
The tournament took place over two consecutive weekends. The second leg featured play-off games and plate finals, followed by the main finals and prize-giving on October 4.

Top-ranking players
• Men’s singles: Kobri du Preez beat Lucas van der Merwe in the finals;
• Men’s doubles: Mats du Preez and twin brother Bjorn beat their father, Kobri, and Ernst de Wet;
• Ladies’ singles: Michelle Li lost to Delia Jo-Anne Agliotti in the finals;
• Ladies’ doubles: Delia Agliotti and Jenny Ross won;
Mixed doubles: Kobri du Preez and Jenny Ross beat Bjorn and Deidre Vrey in the finals.

Event success
The event, organised by the club and sponsored by Wimpy Atlasville and the Mooiriver Bakery in Boksburg, was successful.
The winners received medals and trophies before the day concluded with a ‘lekker’ braai.
Club representative Deidre Vrey congratulated the winners and thanked all participants and supporters who were part of the event.

Background
This championship, the club’s last event of the year, followed the Vets Championships in August for players over 50. That event came after the league, usually held in May, following the annual January Senior Tournament at the Benoni Lake courts.
State of affairs
Many local sports clubs are battling to stay afloat amid a lack of funding and deteriorating facilities. Vrey said that while their club also feels the pinch, they remain resilient, and management continues working to keep the club running.
“We are doing well. We have good players and some new members who joined this year. At the end of last June, we were crowned the winners of the district championships, where our players competed against teams from the Gauteng eastern region.
“We try our best to keep the club going through marketing on social media. We host many fun days to raise funds, such as our recent golf day, which helps us generate income to maintain the courts and clubhouse.
“There is no funding from Ekurhuleni, but despite the financial challenges, we still manage, thanks to the partnerships with local businesses and support from the community,” she said.
