IN PICTURES: Tommy Malone 7.5km fun run draws 390 enthusiastic participants

The Tommy Malone Memorial Race continues to attract participants of all fitness levels- from seasoned runners chasing personal bests to casual walkers simply out for a good time.

A lively crowd of 390 runners and walkers hit the streets of Boksburg on October 19 for the 7.5km Tommy Malone Memorial Fun Run, which kicked off at the Boksburg Stadium.

Despite the cloudy skies, the festive atmosphere proved once again why the annual event is a firm favourite on the local running calendar.

Brakpan twins Caleb and Megan-Ann Roberts stole the spotlight, sprinting across the finish line to claim the men’s and women’s 7.5km fun run titles respectively. Their strong performances added a competitive spark to what was otherwise a relaxed and community-driven race.

Among those lacing up their running shoes for the first time was 55-year-old Charmaine Human from Delmore.

“My friend, who did the 15km, encouraged me to do it,” she said with a big smile as she caught her breath along the route.

“I usually do the parkrun in Pretoria, and when she asked me if I knew about the Tommy Malone Race, I went and did some research. I then decided to take part, but only in the 7.5km. I do this to make myself feel better and to live a healthier life. My experience has been out of the top drawer. The weather played along beautifully, and I enjoyed every moment.”
